As you all probably know, Dublin is the capital
of Ireland, and therefore a very interesting city to visit. But maybe you would
like to see a little bit of what Dublin can offer you so you can decide if you
want to go see it for real. Here you have a little guide of interesting places
to visit in Dublin.
If you are interested in architecture you will
find amazing ancient buildings in the city, especially religious ones. Dublin
is special in this sense because it has two cathedrals, which is highly uncommon:
SAINT PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL
It is the largest one and it is open to visits,
but you will probably have to pay a little bit. This beautiful cathedral was founded
in 1191 and dedicated to Ireland’s patron saint, from whom it received its name.
CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL
Originally, this was a wooden church built in 1038.
However, it was extended and restored several times, until the actual structure
took form in the 1870s.
You can also visit several museums in the city.
In them, you can learn about the history of Dublin and the whole country, see
their traditions, their way of life throughout the centuries, and many other
interesting cultural aspects:
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF IRELAND
Here you can see archaeological objects found
in Ireland as well as artefacts dating from 7000BC to the 20th Century.
There is also a Natural History building in
this museum, in which you can see galleries of animals from Ireland and overseas
(not alive specimens, I’m afraid)
This is a historical recreation museum, located
in a part of Christ’s Church Cathedral. You can see actors performing as
Vikings and Medieval Dubliners so you can get a glimpse of how life was in that
times.
Ireland is famous for its beer, especially the
Guinness brand, which started to be produced in Dublin in 1759. For a long
time, St. James's Gate Brewery was the city’s larger employer. If you are
interested in learning how beer is made, this is a perfect visit for you. They
even let you try some samples so you can taste different kinds of beer. Also,
you can see a magnificent view of the city from the bar at the top of the
building, where you can learn some fun facts about important buildings and
areas that can be seen from there.
TRINITY COLLEGE
This is Ireland’s oldest university, and was
originally located outside Dublin. Nowadays, however, the current college
buildings are surrounded by the city. The Library of the Trinity College is
famous for containing millions of printed volumes and some valuable manuscripts,
including the famous Book of Kells.
You can take a virtual walk around the Trinity
College by using Google Maps’ Streetview! Click here to start.
Also, why don’t you explore a little bit
further? Maybe you can find some other interesting landmarks around the city, like the Ha'penny Bridge,
or the Temple Bar area, which is the best place in Dublin if you want to hang
out with your friends while having a drink or attending a cultural event at an
art gallery.
And if you want to go shopping and also watch
street performers that sing, dance, act or take funny pictures of you and your
friends, you should go to Grafton Street, one of Dublin’s liveliest places.
Sometimes, usually in Christmas, you can even see some famous Irish singers
like Bono from U2 or Sinead O’Connor performing to raise money for charities.
You can see a regular day at Grafton Street in this video:
There are more interesting places in Dublin, but that's it for today. Maybe you could share some more in the comments if you know them or if you have been there. If not, would you like to visit Dublin?
